I started with something that was necessary, a curtain. Originally, the panels were cut to the size
of the window just downstairs, but have since shrunk, so even now they wouldn’t provide
complete coverage from examining eyes. A curtain is a border, an edge, a limit: it separates
space, creating an inside and outside. Some may draw the curtains while having sex, trying on
clothes, or simply while taking a shower. Others are escorted behind curtains to be forcibly
searched by hostile agents. That is to say a border can create the opportunity for exploration,
community, alternative states of reality, as well as the invisible performance of power. They
allow continuity, or, on the other hand, rupture for both very specific and generalized types of
bodies. A border has an ambiguous, complex, and shifting character, on one side secure, the
other anxious. You can’t think for yourself if you don’t have space for yourself.

complete coverage from examining eyes. I sewed the panels together, soaked them in vinegar
and then dyed them with iron oxide powder. I wanted to make my own iron curtain to see what
that felt like on the outside, rather than in. I made a second curtain at the same time as the first,
on top of the other, a kind of distorted mirror image, maybe a doppelgänger of sorts. When the
curtain is bunched up really close together it almost seems to become some sort of entity
looming at the edge. Whether this entity is happy, sad, shy, or alert is unclear and at a moments
notice that character could change if you twitch at it the wrong way...
